Introduction

The ST-01 Smoothness Tester is a highly accurate instrument designed to measure the surface smoothness of paper and board using the Bekk Method. It is specifically used to assess the smoothness of these materials.

Smoothness is a key metric that gauges the degree of surface irregularity on paper. It reflects how flat and smooth the surface of the paper is. In technical terms, smoothness refers to the time it takes for air to pass through a defined space between the test sample surface and a ring-shaped surface under controlled contact and pressure conditions. The time is measured in seconds (s). A longer time indicates better smoothness and a higher smoothness rating. In general, papers with higher smoothness levels produce better print quality, making smoothness an essential factor in achieving superior printing outcomes.

Bekk Smoothness:
The time in seconds required, under a set pressure difference, to pull a specific amount of air at atmospheric pressure between the surface of the test sample and a ring-shaped surface under predefined contact conditions.

Working Principle

 

A test sample of paper or board is placed on a glass plate and subjected to a specified pressure. A partial vacuum is then created, drawing atmospheric air across the contact surface. The time taken for a predetermined change in vacuum is measured.

Additionally, pressure may vary depending on the sample's thickness.
